ARTIST STATEMENT

As I shed my life as an art professional, I am enjoying emerging as a full-time artist into bodies of work I find compelling. Presently, I live and work in the marshlands of Southern New Jersey after a career as an Art Director in the Washington DC metro area. My mixed media paintings reflect this duality: I take materials from my surroundings, and I create work that involves deep musings on societal issues, especially regarding women.

I am deeply inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites as well as my life experience. I am influenced by the natural world around me, and I try to create a context through which to discuss the present, while alluding to an independent realm for my ideas. I am highly figurative and detailed, and my work incorporates elements specifically taken from nature – such as reeds, leaves, hay, flowers, bark, sand, rocks, etc. – with surface texture like papers, compounds and objects.

Life is a tapestry composed of layers. Truth and honesty can be discovered when textures blend creating a new reality. With everything, there is the first glance of recognition. Then through observation, there is knowledge and insight that comes from looking deeper into the medium, subject, and what is happening in the world.

It is my hope that the attraction of form and the beauty of nature make controversial or confrontational subjects more approachable. I strive to make the difficult not just a statement, but a discussion.
