Artist Statement
I am a K-8 public school art educator with a background in printmaking. Although I love print, drawing and painting have become more direct and accessible (especially during quarantine), so I decided to see if Iām a painter.
When creating, I am most interested in how color reacts to color in order to create space. I build up layers, and, although I'm painting, I think about it more like layered drawings or screen-printed shapes.
I tend to think of my work as Non-objective; however lately, more and more figural images have started to appear. I like to play with the in-between, often using line and brush work that simultaneously invoke abstract expressionism as well as cartoons and calligraphy. I like to mix the low with the high-brow without really fitting in either of those spaces. That's what's interesting to me about life in general. The brackish water, so to say.
