ARTIST STATEMENT

In this submission, the three drawings use the expressive power of black and white. I was inspired by some phrases I had seen in the New York Times newspaper after the 2016 presidential election. I felt deeply affected by that election. In some of the drawings the strong vertical lines perhaps suggest deep incising. The verticals also reminded me of Corinthian columns, such as those seen in front of the Supreme Court Building in Washington, D.C.

The other two submissions are colorful, mixed-media collages on paper. "Blues" is a rather straightforward artwork. "Red Job Suspect" incorporates some straightforward text as well as some ambiguous bits and passages of text, and leaves interpretation intentionally more open to the viewer.
