ARTIST STATEMENT

Like my life, my artwork is full of twists and turns, layers of information, and perfect imperfections.  Each piece is unique and a product of my particular process of creating
a monotype.

It begins with a gelatin plate.  On that plate,
I place a variety of acrylic paint and mediums.  As the paper is pulled from the printing plate, I continue to add colors and other materials like string and found objects to the plate.  Each iteration informs the next as I apply more paint and texture, and magic is created by the layers left behind from each subsequent pull.

It is difficult to come to a stop as the process
itself is very intuitive and meditative.  My imagination is ignited by the abstract shapes
seen in the textural layers.  These shapes may become, for me, faces, animals, figures, or patterns.  Occasionally, I go back into the print with other mediums to develop and reveal what my mind can see.

Because the printing plate is made of a gelatin-like substance, there is slight movement within each print, especially around the edges.  Scattered marks appear throughout the work as each print is made using a plate with remnants from the process.  These abnormalities are not flaws but characteristics that indicate history and individuality.  They invite the viewer to look closely, discern, and respond to the world I have created on the page, a world where silly can meet serious, and possibilities abound.
