ARTIST STATEMENT
I make art to lessen the burden of loneliness, both in the world and in myself. Connecting with people is something I’ve always struggled with, but as a child I always felt connected to artists that I liked. Art that showed vulnerability made me feel seen, and I wanted to do that for others. By sharing those parts of myself with art, and creating the opportunity for others to interact with it, I feel connected to the audience as well as them to me. I make work with a careful attention to rendering, line, and shape that evokes an intimacy between the viewer and the work. My content matters are the things that make me feel the most isolated, like the experiences of anxiety, growing up in an authoritarian environment, and the difficulties of growing up with undiagnosed ADHD. I depict these ideas using dark atmospheres, the night sky, shadows, and women. A strong attention to light characterizes most of my pieces, with very gentle and soft tonal rendering or color shifts. I mainly work in printmaking, papermaking, and bookarts, which all allow a very physical connection with the pieces.
