Artist Statement

Born in Canada, I came to Philadelphia to complete a post-doctoral residency in periodontics. My experience as a dental surgeon has given me a good grasp of spacial interpretation and line, and developed a keen sense of observation. After I sustained an injury that ended my career in dentistry, I turned to art teaching then to creating art of my own. After painting representational still-life and landscape paintings, my work has evolved in an abstract direction, specifically in oil and cold wax medium or with watercolors. With cold wax and oil, painting is a spontaneous process of discovery where multiple layers are often scraped back to reveal interesting surprises and textures. My paintings are richly layered with mark and texture and seek to explore the unknown. I paint with passion and energy and hope my final creations express something that can’t be verbalized but only experienced. I invite my viewers to suspend thought for feeling and let the work transport them. Inspiration is found in nature, travel, interesting patinas, art of all kinds and the beauty that surrounds us. My work is in private collections in the US, Canada and Europe and in the permanent collection of The Museum of Encaustic Art in Santa Fe, NM. I have exhibited in juried local, national and international shows. Most recently I was selected to represent Pennsylvania in the 50 States/200 Artists show at the MoEA in Santa Fe, NM and featured on CTV News in Canada.
