ARTIST STATEMENT
My paper obsession started when I was looking for paper projects to do with my students. I found interesting projects and techniques to try like origami, rolling and folding paper. I began to create pieces as samples for my class. As I did this I found it became a relaxing break from my stone carving. As I put the rolled paper together the paper began to take on a life of its own and my ideas began to take shape. I like exploring the abstract quality of using rolled paper, the blending of armatures and paper and using molds to make paper masks to create pieces that can hang on the wall. My paper pieces mainly focus on the face as compared to my stone pieces which are figurative and explore the whole body. My paper faces are mask like and have an ethereal quality. They speak of space and time in abstract terms and the limitless boundaries in which they exist.
