ARTIST STATEMENT

Lady #1 and Lady #2 In Striped Skirt are 3D collages from my "Sensuous Stripes" series. They are abstract works using details cropped from my photographs of people wearing striped clothing. I print out sections of images on acid free matte photo paper to use as collage material. I manipulate my striped print-outs into 3 dimensional forms that play with real and illusionistic space. I use book cloth to extend and connect the stripes. I love the abstract power of the striped patterns when combined in myriad configurations. What fascinates me in stripes is how rigid patterns of parallel lines become organic and undulating when seen on the human form.

GreatWall Yellow and GreatWall Primaries I and II are collages from my "Stones of Resonance: CHINA" series. Here I create imaginary abstract vistas to evoke the depth and vastness of the Chinese landscape. Each composition contains a different photograph of the massive stone structures I climbed some years ago on the Great Wall of China. I've adjusted the color of my photos in order to blend them seamlessly with collaged layers of my signature alcohol ink infused papers.
