Artist Statement
I, Robin Brownfield, am a former sociology professor in Collingswood, New Jersey who turned to art after becoming disabled. I have created murals, garden walkways, and countless other mosaic works. Touted as one of the best mosaic artists in NewJersey by Best of NJ magazine, I was featured in a FOX-29(Philadelphia) News report, because, after she saw my series of Black Lives Matter mosaics, I was commissioned by Tamika Palmerto do a mosaic portrait of her daughter, Breonna Taylor, whose death, in part, launched an international movement for justice for victims of racist murders. That portrait can be seen in the new documentary “Bree Way: Promise Witness Remembrance.” Currently, I am supervising a community mosaic mural project that I designed at Thomas Sharp Elementary School in Collingswood, NJ.
My art has changed over the years from being colorful representations of wildlife and people, to being thought-provoking, representations of both reality and fantasy. Many of my pieces are about the tolls of war, racism, confinement, abuse, slavery and exploitation, and yet others are about joy, sharing, compassion, and being light-hearted. The pieces I’m submitting are a small sampling of my work, which has won numerous awards and has been in galleries throughout the United States.
