Artist Statement

I am a painter influenced by what is familiar to me. My work comments on my daily life, the things I encounter and my experiences with family, memories, beloved places like studios, home, my childhood home and the trees and landscape in the coastal town where I have lived all my life. I am very much drawn to the memory of the family sign shop where I spent 30 years with my Dad and two brothers. These are the subjects I return to again and again.

My style of painting evokes reality but breaks from it at the same time. The subject is a starting point. Places and spaces are recognizable but often merged or combined to form something more felt than an actual depiction of a place or a space. The process requires a surrender on my part; a push and pull, choosing what to add and what to leave and often unexpected things happen in the painting, and I must choose to follow these surprises and let the painting dictate the outcome. Whenever I do this the painting excites me. There is vitality, what is spoken in the paint is undefinable, something more. For me, there is something better to be found in letting go and being a vehicle for the outcome.

The then and the now, the memory and the now become merged into one. A new combined place or space emerges. A new reality.
