ARTIST STATEMENT

Separ8tor is a mosaic artist using recycled plastic medicine caps as their primary material. The work reflects on personal identity, process, aesthetics and experiences related to the materiality of the work and on the phenomenological act and transience of the viewing experience. Our personal experiences are constantly changing structures composed of hundreds of little moments, decisions, circumstances as well as nature and nurtural factors.

Although it’s easy to feel lost in search for our identities and place in the world, sometimes all it takes is stepping back to get a better view of the whole picture. The same idea applies here as well. The principle that the viewer/audience is subject to their own interpretation of an artists’ work is insistent. One can get lost in the details/colors/material/aesthetics (or lack thereof) or one can step back and discover something else.

To ingeminate Anaïs Nin, “we are what we see(k)”.

And to paraphrase, “You are what hue see(k)”
