ARTIST STATEMENT
I am a multi-expressive artist inspired by my experiences living, working and creating in New Jersey and Philadelphia with a passionate connection to the arts in underserved communities since the 1980’s.
My artworks focus on feelings, people and portraits, expressions in motion through the spaces that fill human connection. The beauty of cultural diversity is central to my heart.
My desire to explore beyond my caucasian and jewish roots as an adopted child opened my heart to embracing people of different races and religions and upbringings.
My artistic process leans in close absorbing the moments of people doing positive motivating activities together. I enjoy sketching and painting with people. The portraits I create are from real life interactions, home life, teaching art, life in the city, and in nature. I get excited by the immediacy of capturing a moment on my phone for an inspired painting. Transparent to opaque, I get caught up in layering and scrubbing away, enhancing the textures and details I choose to emphasize.
My palette is very immediate. I jump in mixing and blending colors with a dose of intention and pinch of happenstance. On canvas I start off in motion with my brush, my fingers, a palette knife stirring up the energy, that childlike immediacy. I go with my own flow. I pop into a pose midstream to get in touch with emotion, to feel the energy.
My watercolor paintings explore the calm curious side of me, intuitively like a journey awakening my spirit. This is my personal healing space where paint speaks to me. Edges meander, colors spread, connecting and aligning to my internal vision. I recall a feeling from past or perhaps future, imagery of yoga, dance, qigong, anything that rises in me, I let flow.
