ARTIST STATEMENT
After many years of working traditionally in a realistic style using oil on canvas and wood, I have transitioned to abstract painting. Creating abstract work has allowed more freedom and opportunity to showcase feelings, intuition, ideas, and individual expression. My abstract paintings are a reflection of my inner thoughts, emotions, struggles, and triumphs. Transitioning from representational artwork to abstract has been challenging and exciting. I've been working at learning and getting better at finding my voice and creating abstract paintings.
Much of my work is mixed media using acrylic, collage, and a variety of mark-making tools. The artwork is comprised of multiple layers of paint, marks, collage, drawing, and textures. Color, values, composition, and shapes are used to add interest to the artwork.
I was born in Portugal and my family emigrated to New York where I attended school and went on to graduate from Parson’s School of Design (NY) with a BFA in Illustration. My career has spanned graphic design, print production, web design, computer graphics trainer, and technology research and strategy. Nevertheless, throughout I have pursued my primary passion of creating art.
