ARTIST STATEMENT

Minimalist in concept, I am a visual artist informed by our living history. In the everyday turbulence of our human experience I created my body of work, Finding the Calm to explore inner peace. My contemporary paintings comprise of wax pastels on Ampersand kaolin clay surface panels. Traditionally, wax pastels are used as a drawing medium and become watercolor when water is applied to the drawing. I reinvented the process dissolving the wax pastel stick in water to soften then allowing the color to flow creating its own marks on the smooth clay surface panel. I am drawn to the wax pastel medium because it is transformative; the three-dimensional solid stick dissolves into a liquid and dries as a new two-dimensional form. The paintings evolved through time, color, and space. Only after the flow of layers of paint dried on the clay surface panel could the paintings be realized. Soothing flowing forms of color wander without resistance navigating negative space creating the dreamscapes. Informed by the undulating ocean, my painting series offers the viewer calming portals reminiscent of floating on water to find their own peaceful space.
