ARTIST STATEMENT

I am drawn to muted, subtle tones that surround us in nature and our environment. Whether exploring the texture of pebbles on a shoreline or eroded rocks and stones under flowing streams, I enjoy imparting the exquisite, understated beauty of what surrounds us when we take a deeper look.

My process begins freely, applying layers of paint and collage materials, unscripted and without intention. This playful expression in the beginning creates wonder and emerging possibilities. I then shift my approach from spontaneous play to observation, responding to my work with more consideration, addressing design, color, and composition. The flow between intuitive play and decisive evaluation is constant throughout my process.

Working in layers and then sanding the surface, I uncover elements of mystery and intrigue, revealing delightful complexities underneath it all. The layers of undergrowth that push through are perhaps a metaphor for the life layers within each of us, under the surface.

I experiment with different materials and mark-making tools to create texture, nuance and surprising details. I invite the viewer to be drawn in for a closer look, to make subtle discoveries of their own.
