ARTIST STATEMENT

As a day-one animal rights activist, my art concerns itself with the dejection and exploitation of animals. I focus on the depiction of their vulnerability, either through the portrayal of specific instances of animal suffering, or the peaceful existence of animals living in harmony with each other and with the Earth. I intentionally omit human figures to leave the viewer complicit in their suffering and avoid any projection of the self onto the piece. In other words, I prevent the viewer from projecting themselves onto the piece as humanity has done for most of art history. I believe that animals deserve their own space, void of humanity and its historic need to intrude on animalkind. In this sense, I cater to both those familiar with the art world and those outside of it, as both artists and non-artists can recognize the forms I depict and appreciate the intentional stylistic choices.

My work unifies abstraction with representation, utilizing expressive, calligraphic lines to capture form and value. I am particularly interested in the loose, stylistic quality of the calligraphy line, integrating it into various mediums to maintain an intentional consistency throughout my body of work. My style closely mirrors that of Abstract Expressionism and Impressionism while still accutely representing the natural world. I balance intricate details with straightforward imagery, exploring how features can be meticulously rendered as well as implied to create a whole image. I emphasize the aesthetic qualities of animals, particularly texture and movement, and channel my connection to animals by depicting the shocking history of agony they’ve endured. My work is essentially an apology to animals for humanity’s relentless torment and an attempt to reconcile by exposing their suffering to the public eye.
