Artist Statement
Nina Yocom is a self-taught artist, born and raised in suburban Philadelphia. Her earliest exposure to fine art was when her mother volunteered in her public elementary schools with a program called βArt Goes to School.β This innovative program exposed her to a variety of artists and their work, along with an understanding of the color wheel and how colors work together. Her father, an award-winning photographer, also influenced her own lens. This background, along with a liberal arts education, cultivated an appreciation for how art is a conduit of connection. As an emerging artist in her early 50s, Nina feels that she is making a radical re-discovery of self, enhanced by the act of creating.
In her work Nina allows the flow of alcohol ink to organically form the structure of her piece, while controlling the layout of her painting with tools such as hot and cool air, brushes, cotton fibers, and sponges, to name a few. On occasion, she layers acrylic paint and fine liner pen over the alcohol ink once it has dried. She enjoys this medium as a way to express gratitude, hope, healing, and self-acceptance.
