ARTIST STATEMENT

I have a three-prong practice: large (5’x14’) political color pencil drawings using the figure for form; small plein air oil on canvas typically from Central Park and when possible, accommodating the figure; thirdly large (50’x167”) figure paintings from imagination, usually from childhood memories, also oil on canvas. The figure remains central to my practice. During warm weather my plein air work deepens my understanding of nature and landscape. This allows me a resourcefulness I am looking for in the large figure paintings because I play with outdoor and indoor narratives. The drawings are in-depth studies of the figure depicting current events. My ambition is to continue to coalesce the three. I paint daily outdoors weather permitting, study the results nightly and persevere experimenting and observing to achieve implementing the figure into my plein air. Furthering the pursuit of marrying the figure to landscape I paint large figure paintings referencing the drawings and plein air.
