ARTIST STATEMENT

I paint to relieve tension, and to understand it. My acrylic paintings often begin with studies of nature - seeking quiet in plants, birds, fungi, the human form. There is a peace in just sitting with nature that is vital. But we can’t be still all of the time, and inevitably, something pulls on a thread that unravels the thing into something new. My paintings are reworkings of observation augmented by imagination and coming out of the stillness.

Describing the human experience as part of nature is tantamount to my creative process. Through surreal landscape and observation, I enjoy exploring the exchange of influence between people and their environment. These paintings represent the tumult of nature, contrasting stillness with the robust activity and color that exists often unnoticed, within every ecosystem.

Circular forms often serve as a skeleton for a piece, which is then built with layers of paint in a cyclical nature around the substrate, ever mindful of the role cycles play in our world.
