Artist Statement

Over the last ten years I have been exploring STRIPES in a number of ongoing series, always using collage as my primary medium. My collage materials include details from my photographs of people wearing striped clothing. I am interested in how the rigid patterns of parallel lines can appear organic and sensuous when seen draped on the human form. I print out sections of the images on acid free photo paper and combine them with unique papers. Seeking more and more striped images for my non-objective art, I’ll photograph anyone I see wearing stripes, getting as close up as they let me.

I like the excitement, the surprise that comes from a chance placement of collage elements. I love the process of discovery. I enjoy the balance I can achieve between spontaneity and control. My art and my life has always been about finding an equilibrium for my emotional and my intellectual responses. I do not plan my compositions in advance, although some general formatting is predetermined when I want to pursue a particular direction and explore new ideas in depth.

These new “WeeCanvasStripes” collages were created with remnants from my large and growing
Stripes Image collection. These works include Asian papers and stripes printed on canvas. They are composed both within and on top of square frame mats.
