ARTIST STATEMENT
The paintings of paper airplanes I consider to be letters; love letters, dialogues, questions. Continuing to work is normal for me and the voices I bring into the studio are based on the notion of dialogues with people I will never meet, and my obligation to them. Also included in the audience of these letters are family and friends who may have passed.
Artists generally bring an audience to the studio, like it or not, in the form of critics, people we want to please, etc. I supplant the voices of my "demons" with those I would, as David Bowie might say, would consider to be spirits.
As breaths between larger more complex works these paintings function to me as addressing personal and pointed issues. Certainly there is a color harmony solution within each, and this harmony/ tension serves as the location of the dialogue within each letter.
