ARTIST STATEMENT
Trees are felled to produce junk-mail, absolute nonsense about: "gutter cleanings" & "re-electing republicans for town council" & that is bad enough, but the sheer volume of this unwanted paper being thrown out - unlooked at- makes it all the sadder. I try to turn this slew of "introductory offers" & similar trash back into something large, loud, & colorful.
Frequently, these are scenes that seem to take place part way through some sort of story - illustrations for a narrative that hasn’t been shared. Any events, before or after, are open to consideration, to discussion, & debate.
The part that I like the best is people standing in front of the art: thinking. In this way, what was recently: waste paper, discarded wire, rags, and string are honestly considered for the first time. And, as beautiful as I try to make these recycled media pieces, other people's minds inventing personalities, backstories, & justifications for a world fabricated (with stolen & unattended pieces of our real one), that is the part that really amazes me.
