ARTIST STATEMENT
My focus is primarily on the figure-ground relationship and the porous boundaries between subject and background, focal point, and periphery. Images move forward or dissolve into the ground-environment depending on how the eye moves across the drawing, or if attention wanders while looking. In either case it is possible to see and then unsee an image or find or lose a subject within the visual field. This transience within our perception of a picture intrigues me because even within a still image its possible to create a sense of suspense related to a reveal. Selections from my series, “She Was Always A Princess”, include more than a dozen drawings based on the life of Meghan Markle and focus on the British monarchy’s colonialist past and Meghan’s reinvention as a royal through her marriage to Prince Harry. Other works deal with social and historical events or personal themes.
