ARTIST STATEMENT
My primary medium is paper collage. I have explored many subjects over the years, creating my own distinctive materials and searching for innovative ways to express each visual theme.
My "Sensuous Stripes" series was originally inspired by a fashion trend I had mistakenly thought began in China. This series has evolved into deeper explorations of geometric patterns integrated with expressive forms. These abstract collages are composed with details from my photographs of people wearing striped clothing. I print out sections of images on acid free photo paper to use as collage material.
This work, "Inked Growth-Red", contains a centered square digital photograph, extended with hand drawn India Ink stripes on mylar, plus Asian and other papers placed beneath a transparent mylar surface.
I love the abstract power of the striped patterns when combined in myriad combinations. What fascinates me in stripes is how rigid patterns of parallel lines become organic, undulating and sensual when photographed on the human body.
