Artist Statement

My process begins with intentions. I layer line and marks intuitively. The lines flow, are dynamic and create movement. Some are strong and bold, others whisper. I then add color in mutiple layers, scraping back to reveal under layers as I build the piece, revealing happy surprises. I want the essence of my work to be evocative and passionate. I am inspired by the beauty of the natural world in its glory and its decaying forms. My goal is to have the viewer bring their own personal experiences and feelings to interpreting the work and hope my paintings carry a sense of uplifting energy, empowering inspiration, a moment of escape and always a sense of beauty.

Born in Canada, I came to Philadelphia to complete a residency in periodontics and stayed for love. Twenty years of volunteer work as an art educator with Art Goes to School fueled a passion to create art of my own. My experience as a dental surgeon has given me a good grasp of spatial interpretation and line while it honed a keen sense of observation. It informs my art practice. When I discovered oil and cold wax, I felt my creative and professional lives had merged. I traded conventional paint brushes with improvised tools to move paint around with, many not unlike my surgical ones. My work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Encaustic Art in Santa Fe, NM and I was selected to represent Pennsylvania in their 50 States/200 Artists show. I have been honored to show my work in juried shows locally, nationally and internationally. Recently, I was featured on CTV news in Canada where my work is at the Timmins National Museum and Exhibition Center raising funds for a women's shelter. Art enriches my life and brings me joy.
